Joan Plato, an American painter, spent her early career as a computer systems architect in Northeastern USA. While in her late 40's, she took a drawing course at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and has been painting ever since. She works mainly in acrylics, is highly experimental, and creates by intuition as new layers emerge. She spent her childhood by the stony shores of Lake Ontario and claims those outdoor experiences are woven throughout her being and her paintings. Her love of nature and hiking are reflected in the Nature Series and depict an intimate understanding of place. She has been influenced by many artists to include Paul Klee, Van Gogh, Miro, Joan Mitchell and David Smith.
